Eats | Niederegger Marzipan Hamper...

*Hamper kindly gifted

Christmas is one of my favourite times of year - not just because I get to spend plenty of time with family without the back to work guilt after a couple of days but also the food. I love Christmas food - Mince Pies, Pigs in Blankets, Christmas Drinks. You name it and I will eat it.

Fashion | Top 10 Vintage Clothing Finds...

There is something about following a crowd which I have never liked.  I dislike being the same as everyone else particularly when it comes to fashion which means I tend to shop vintage clothing pieces more often than not.

Beauty | The Body Shop Colour Crush Lipstick...

Out of all makeup products, Lipsticks are by far my favourite to purchase. I am such a sucker for a classic red. Do I need another Red? No. Do I buy another Red even though I have another one like it? Absolutely.

Life | Importance of self-care...

It is all too easy nowadays to be too busy: too busy to make that gym class; too busy trying to manage a side hustle while working full-time or too busy to even find time to do nothing.

I am one of those people (there I've actually said it). I don't know how to do nothing. I am always on the go trying to balance work, gym, blog and a social life. Honestly, it's like playing a game of Buckaroo 90% of the time. I don't know how to switch off.

Earlier this year, I got to a point where I had to do something different so I started to take time for myself without the guilt. And you know what? It has paid dividends as now I'm less stressed, much happier and really enjoying life.

So what ways can you practice self-care?

001) Read a book:

I used to love reading when I was younger and for some reason, I can't quite work out why I                stopped doing it so much as I love it.

002) Listen to a podcast:

Podcasts are probably one of my favourite finds. I love a good podcast and there is nothing like          switching one on and letting the world drift on by.

003) Go for a walk:

Getting some fresh air is one of the best ways that you can take a little time for yourself. Even            better: listen to a podcast.

004) Make time for that gym class:

Exercise has so many benefits. So why not try that combat class you have been putting off for              months because you simply don't have time? (Spoiler: you'll probably actually enjoy it)

005) Have a pamper session:

Nothing screams self-care more than a pamper session. I just love spending time on myself                  painting my nails, applying a face mask and generally pretending I'm somewhere far away.                  If you want to go one step further, book yourself in somewhere for a bit of pampering.

006) Watch Tv:

No laptops, no Social Media. Nada. Just you and the TV (and maybe a hot drink)

007) Bake:

I love baking for pleasure. The only problem is I only do it if I have people to give the baking            to. Otherwise, I eat the entire thing (oops!)

008) Bring out your creative side:

Whether that is drawing, photography, knitting or cross-stitching, indulging in these habits is              good for the soul. I'm naturally a creative person so hobbies like this are completely up my                  street.

Blogging | 10 Things I remember from early blogging days...

Teacups and Buttondrops has been hanging around this little space of interwebs for 8 years (in 2 days time to be precise - whaaaat!). Needless to say, times have changed and blogging has definitely changed for the better. So what better way to celebrate this milestone than to reminisce about the 'good old days'.

Fitness | BHGE 10K...

Given a choice, I will always pick a trail race over a road race simply because they are kinder to my body. However, saying that I would never say no to one particularly if it is taking place in my city.

Beauty | Benefit Boi-ing Hydrating Concealer...

Shopping for a new concealer can be an arduous task. You find one you like and it has great coverage but then it costs an arm and a leg. You then find one within your budget but then it is not long-lasting. See told you it was arduous.

Needless to say, I like to stick to brands and products that I already love. It makes my life easier and I know what I am getting for my money.

Life | 10 Things to tell my student self...

001) Tequila is not and will never be your friend.
002) Ridiculously high heels are not either.
003) Supernoodles will not exist in your diet once you graduate.
004) Leaving things until the last minute is never a wise decision but on the positive you made friends with the 24 hour MacRobert Building.
005) You do not need ALL the things. Truth is you will end up discarding most of the rubbish once you move out.
006) Enjoy it to the max: make memories, laugh lots and take plenty of disco naps. Once you graduate, you will learn that adulting is hard and there is not much of a disposable income to play with. Truth is (amongst other things) you will have no more student discount and you have to learn you now have to pay grown up bills (like Council Tax)
007) Some people are never meant to stay with you past graduation but others will. They will be the ones who will reminisce about uni days; the ones who will make you laugh until you cry and also the ones you may or may not give your last rolo to.
008) Gain work experience during holidays - it will help in the long run.
009) Join the uni gym - you will actually like it. Trust me.
010) Make your thesis design much simpler - even though successful results were gathered, you may have got better, more concise results on different substrates (just saying...)

Eats | Butternut Squash Soup...

Since July, I have been craving the colder months mainly so I can eat a lot of soup and not feel bad.

One of my ultimate favourites is Butternut Squash soup. It is so simple to make and a great crowd-pleaser. I made this for my parents not too long ago and even my Dad (who swears blind he doesn't like Butternut Squash) said he really enjoyed it.

Local | The Spiritualist Aberdeen...

Aberdeen is a city of many things: Granite, Rowies and Gigantic thieving Seagulls to mention a mere few. However, it is also home to some of the best independent cafes and restaurants around so needless to say there are always plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and a cocktail (or three...)

Monthly Favourites | August...

August flew by in an instant and ended with my birthday celebrations. As much as I love the warmth, I am definitely looking forward to the cooler months: mainly candles, hot chocolate and staying in listening to the rain batter on the window panes while creating plenty of blog content.

So what did I love in August?

Life | 7 Ways to make your money stretch further...

Budgeting is something that comes fairly naturally to me. When I was growing up my parents always taught me not to live beyond my means and if I do really want something, budget or save for it. And in a world where households have to pay out more for daily essentials, it now seems even more important to do so.

Beauty | Clarins Skin Spa...

If there is one thing that you need to do in life then it is definitely take a half day/day off of work to go and try out a spa treatment.

Afternoon Tea is one of those experiences that is good for any occasion: Have a Birthday? Afternoon Tea. Have a Hen Party? Afternoon Tea. Have a Girls Day out? Afternoon Tea. You name it, it is good for anything.

Fitness | Balmoral 10K...

Balmoral Castle is perhaps one of the most famous royal residences. However, once a year (usually April) it plays host to a running festival. Over the course of the weekend, participants can opt to take part in a number of races whether they do it for charity or for their own personal gain.

I decided to participate in the 10K race as part of my challenge this year to raise money for Epilepsy Research UK. The 10K route is such a beautiful route: you start just along from the castle, head up through the woods, hit a massive hill and then start a beautiful trail run all the way down. It really is beautiful - no wonder it is a royal residence!

Race day itself was incredibly hot which made for a tricky race. Not only were you trying to push for a good time, you also had to contend with the heat and ensure that you weren't going to suffer any ill effects. This is much trickier than it seems.

Overall, I really enjoyed this race and managed to complete it in 1 hr 8 mins. Despite the heat, it has perhaps been one of my favourites so far.  The route itself is second to none and there is something a little mesmerising about running through beautiful Scottish scenery. In addition, as this run is mainly through woods, I found that I have developed a preference for trail running as opposed to road running.

If you fancy donating (a little means a lot) you can visit my justgiving page here (I still have a race left in September)

Beauty | Products worth repurchasing...

Over the years, I have tried and tested many beauty products. Some were amazing, some were okay-ish and there was also some absolute horrors (which clearly went straight in the bin). However, there are a few gems that I find now and again and it is those gems that I continually repurchase.

So which products am I never without?

Monthly Favourites | June...

Nice weather, ice cream and light nights means that summer is definitely rolling in. Needless to say, I spend my days longing to be outside in the sunshine with said ice cream (why do I have to work in an office Mon-Fri? Oh wait I'm a 'responsible' adult)

June flew by in an instant and I can't quite believe I'm doing my monthly favourites once again. This month features a number of new purchases which is pretty unusual for me...

Monthly Favourites | May...

Left to right: Aloe Vera plant, Tortoiseshell sunglasses, Blue Sweatshirt with Michigan in yellow, Livias Kitchen Biccy Boms; Make up brush and Body Shop Foundation

May felt like a particularly long month for various reasons but thankfully my Monthly Favourites are not quite so long.

So what was I loving?

Life | The weekly spend...

Nothing says 'balancing act' like trying to balance your finances during the month. It is all too easy to get a little carried away at the start of the month when you've been living off beans for three weeks prior.

Beauty | Body Shop Foundation comparison...

Finding a Foundation that you absolutely love is massively trial and error. There are so many brands, so many shades and so many types of coverage which means that it is hard to even know where to start. Over the years, I have trialed many brands and generally Estee Lauder's Double Wear Light has come out on top. However, at £33.50 a pop, it's certainly by no means the cheapest option.

Fitness | Virtual Running...

Running has never been my strong point. I'm not one of those people who finds running easy - I find it incredibly tough and although I have done a couple of 10K's in the past, it never gets any easier.

Fitness: Jan de Vries Revitalising Essence...

I am one of those people that never seem to have a stop button: I am always on the go. Needless to say tiredness is something I struggle with on a daily basis. I do try and improve my sleep naturally by having early nights etc but that is easier said than done. If I need a pick me up, then usually it is coffee which has the goods.

However, as too much Caffeine now gives me really bad headaches, I have been looking at reducing my consumption and looking for alternative methods for when I need a little boost.

Jan de Vries kindly sent me some of their Revitalising Essence to try out. I've never tried anything like this before so I was definitely keen to give it a go.

The Revitalising Essence contains extracts of Peppermint, Cherry Plum & Rock Rose. Each of these attributes to the calming and refreshing influence of this essence. It is simple to use: simply drop a few drops into some water and drink it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this product. I remember one day in particular that I was really tired as  I had been really busy and was reaching for even more coffee (despite having had at least 2 already). I put the coffee down and decided to try this instead and honestly, I felt 10 times better. I was more awake and more focused with no caffeine-induced headache.

March started off with a little bit of a bang did it not? Fingers crossed that the 'Beast from the East' is completely done with us now and Spring can finally make an appearance.

Monthly Favourites | February...

Oh February, you started well but ended miserably. I mean you tempt us with the signs of Spring - the Snowdrops, the lighter evenings and even a slight rise of temperature but then you end it with severe Snowy weather. Just where is the fairness in that?

Fitness | Favourite on-the-go snacks...

If I was given the option, I would rather eat snacks all day than have main meals. I just prefer lots of little things to nibble on.

Being out of the house the majority of the day and then not returning home until late at night means that all my food has to be portable. I am a creature of habit and so the snacks that I use daily stay the same until I really get bored of them.

In the morning for my tea break, I usually have some Fage yoghurt (0% as the other one is too creamy for me to handle) with either some kind of berries or some locally produced Granola. I then accompany this with an apple (normally a Gala or a Pink Lady).

For afternoon tea break, I either have a Nakd bar (Their new Blueberry Muffin one is the best) or a couple of Nutri-bombz (which are incredible bites of delight).

The rest of the day my snacks vary dramatically. However, there are always a good mixture of Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates.

Some of my other snacks that I may have include:

Apple with Peanut Butter (loving this locally produced one from Hungry Squirrel)
Almonds (great source of fat)
Chicken Breast (not your normal snack)
Tuna with Cottage Cheese

The list is actually endless...

Monthly Favourites | January...

January you have been a very long month. I'm not sure if it is because I have been counting down the days to payday or something else. No idea but I know that it has certainly been a long one.

Beauty | James Dun's House Aberdeen...

Having lived within Aberdeen for 12 years, I still haven't met 'the one'. And by 'the one' I don't mean a love interest - I mean a hairdresser.

I've been to a number of different salons in Aberdeen and I have also popped home to visit a salon beside my parents. While it is always lovely to see my parents, I really need to stop visiting just when I need a haircut.

Fitness | Fitness Goals 2018...

001) Drink more water
I am terrible at drinking enough water throughout the day and I usually rely on Tea and Coffee to keep myself hydrated. However, this year I want to increase my water intake and decrease my reliance on Tea and Coffee for hydration.

Eats | Turkey Burgers...

If you had asked me 6 months ago if I would ever make my own burger from scratch, the answer would have been a firm no. Surprisingly they are one of the easiest foods to make from scratch.

Life | 2018 Goals...

A new year means it's time to set new goals right?

Monday, 1 January 2018

Life | Hello January...

January has once again reached us and far too quickly for my liking. This month is all about fresh starts, new goals and a chance to push ourselves to new limits.
