Real Juice Reboot Week 3...

So this week is the final week of my Philips Real Juice Reboot Challenge and if I'm honest, it was a bit of a mixed bag. There were juices I really liked, but also a few I didn't. I think with juicing, a lot of it comes down to personal taste preference more than anything.

Day 15: Immunity Booster
Day 16: Melon Zinger
Day 17: Zesty Twist
Day 18: Tropical Tipple
Day 19: Ginger Power (too good that I forgot to take a photo)
Day 20: Great to be Green
Day 21: Sunrise Starter

Favourite Juice: Tropical Tipple
Least Favourite: Sunrise Starter
Lessons Learnt? I really do not like beetroots juiced!

If you missed part 1 and 2, you can read them here and here. Stayed tuned for a round-up of my juicing experience.

Aqua spinning?

Aqua spin class
Spin bikes after we had set them up

As a spin class regular, I am used to getting down and dirty with a spin bike. So when I was invited to try out aqua spinning at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh in association with Joe Blogs and Simply Health, the temptation was too much for me to resist and so I signed up.

Aqua spin class
Bikes prior to set up and before the floor was lowered

Aqua spinning is exactly as it sounds: a spin class in water. One of the major differences (minus the presence of water obviously) is the bike. An aqua spin bike is much lighter than a normal spin bike and I found that underwater, it had a tendency to move a little bit. In addition, there is also a difference in the way that the resistance is set. On a normal spin bike, you can adjust the resistance all the way throughout the class whereas on an aqua spin bike, the resistance has to be set for the entire class at the beginning. I think that I set my resistance lower than I perhaps should have done for this session: I had it on medium but I should have set it to hard.

And...we're off!

The 45 minute class itself consisted of a lot of different exercises such as standing up, sitting down, spinning fast, spinning slow and at one point hanging off the back of the bike and still peddling (recumbent position and I definitely couldn't do that on a normal spin bike!). There were also many exercises focusing completely on the upper body section and we were encouraged by the instructor to soak the people in front of us as much as possible (sorry!).

Some awesome underwater cameras..

Some benefits of an aqua spin class:

Potential to burn up to 800 calories per hour (!)
Improved flexibility, circulation and blood pressure
Strengthened muscles
Reduced potential for sore muscles after a work-out (excellent!)
Does not put as much pressure on joints as a non-aquatic work out would do

Overall, I really enjoyed this class and I would highly recommend it.It is fun and exciting and the special shoes that you wear are really quite something. In addition, I found that this class does not irritate any prior sports injuries (I have a dodgy right knee) which makes it a good class to attend.

So any recommendations to what I should try next?

Taste creation: Fiery orange soup...

This fiery winter soup is the perfect remedy for bringing a little warmth to the table. With family favourite vegetables, combined with the heat of the Cayenne Pepper, it will heat you up from the inside out.

You will need:

3 Sweet Potatoes
3 Carrots
1/2 Swede (Neep)
1 clove of Garlic
1200ml Vegetable Stock (at least enough to cover the top of the vegetables)
1/2 tsp Cayenne Pepper
1/2 Onion
1 Red Pepper

001) Lightly fry Garlic, Red Pepper, Onion and Cayenne Pepper in a frying pan.
002) Chop and prepare Sweet Potatoes, Carrots and Swede. Place into a separate pan that is suitable for making a pot of soup.
003) Add the contents of the frying pan to the soup pot. Make up stock and pour over the top until all the vegetables are covered.
004) Simmer for around 30-35 mins until the vegetables are soft.
Serve with oatcakes and enjoy!

10 things I have learnt since I started going to the gym...

001) Gone are the days that you will spend hours trawling online for an outfit for a night out. Now, you will spend your time looking up pretty work-out outfits and trainers.
002) Some people choose to not wipe down equipment after use (gross!)
003) Washing your gym kit will become the bane of your life.
004) #fitfam will become a common hashtag on twitter and instagram.
005) No-one will give a crap what you're doing in your work-out as they will be focusing on their own work-out.
006) Trying to book your regular classes in January becomes such a 'snooze you lose' scenario due to the surge of NY resolutioners.
007) Days where you don't feel the dull ache after a work-out, you wonder what on earth is wrong with you.
008)Rest days, although important, will leave you itching to get back in the gym to work-out (seriously!)
009) Your gym timetable will become one of the most important pieces of paper that you own.
010) Early morning work-outs will completely set you up for the rest of the day (it really does!)

Have you learnt anything from going to the gym?

Under the Microscope: Nars Rikugien...

For me, Nars is a stand-out brand. Every product that I have tried, I have loved and Rikugien satin lip pencil is no exception.

Rikugien is described as a rose pink which makes it the perfect lip pencil for whatever the occasion. It is great during the daytime for work and also at night time for when you want to tone your lips down a notch and go for full smoky eyes.

This lip pencil has good wear unlike other brands which I have tried. It applies smoothly and evenly to the lips without much effort required. Therefore, this combined with the colour has made it a fast staple in my make-up bag.

Have you tried anything from NARS?

Real Juice Reboot week 2...

As you may know, I am currently participating in a 21 day juicing challenge in collaboration with Phillips. I posted week 1 last week which you can find here and now it is time for week 2.

Week 2 has probably been my favourite week so far as I found that I preferred much more of the juices this week than last week. I think that there was probably a little more fruit in the recipes this week which was probably the reason for my preference.

Day 8:The Early Bird
Day 9:Beet me up
Day 10: Pre-workout Kick
Day 11: Post-workout refuel
Day 12: The hangover cure
Day 13:The lean machine
Day 14: Flu Fighter

Favourite Juice: The Early Bird
Least favourite: Beet me up

Lessons learnt? Keep your hand away from the tattie peeler - I now have a nice memento on my hand!
Stay tuned for the final part of my juicing challenge next week!
