Beauty Kitchen: Make your own lip balm kit...

Teacups & Buttondrops, beauty

Nine times out of ten, Beauty products which are naturally based will be my weapon of choice. One of my favourite brands, Beauty Kitchen, recently contacted me about reviewing one of their new lip balm making kits*.

I have never made homemade lip balms before so this was something that I was really looking forward to trying. Check out the video below to see how I got on:

Overall, this was a much simpler process than I thought it would be. The instructions provided are clear and concise. However, I would be wary of anyone younger than 15 trying this without supervision as there is a step which involves melting products over a low heat. This is mentioned in the instructions, but I have mentioned this here just in case you consider buying this as a gift for someone young. However, despite that, I would definitely recommend this as a gift as I really enjoyed making the lip balms. Now, as this pack makes 4 lip balms, I now have the difficult decision of who to give the other 3 to....

Christmas at the Filling Station...

On the run-up to Christmas, restaurants and pubs change their menus to a more seasonal-appropriate one. A few weeks ago, I headed along to The Filling Station for a cocktail making session as well to sample their Christmas menu.

Mulled Cider to get the evening started! So good!

Laura from Liparazzi making one of their Christmas cocktails

L-R: Goats Cheese Bruschetta Bites (with a bit of mushroom risotto too I think); Maple Bacon Burger; Traditional Turkey Dinner; Cookie Cheesecake

A cute little snowman to finish off the cocktail making session

Well, what can I say? This Christmas menu is amazing: everything tasted really good! I generally never rave about entire menus but everything on this menu is good. The item that surprised me most was the Cookie Cheesecake. Cheesecake, especially those that contain chocolate, can be a hit or miss with me as I find the majority too heavy. However, this one is light and has a mousse like consistency.

Sunglasses style...

Let's face the truth: Sunglasses are one of those all year round essentials. In Summer they are a staple most days (if you're lucky to see sunshine that is) and in Winter they pretty much stop the low winter sun from blinding you while driving.

Recently I was kindly sent a pair of sunglasses to try from My Bag. I selected an aviator style as it is not only a style that I love, it is also a style which suits my face.

The Body Shop Christmas 2014...

Since I was a young child (easily going back to 1993/94) , The Body Shop has always been one of my favourite places to go. My favourite section was the kids section that they had - lots of brightly coloured goodies presenting themselves to the 7 year old me. Fast-forward a number of years, I still love The Body Shop although I'm more into everything else that they sell.

Recently, I was invited along to the Aberdeen store to see all of the Christmas 2014 goodies that they have. This year there is more than 100 gifts which means there are plenty of options for every single family member - there's even some options for the men in your life! In addition, on every selected gift, 4p will be donated to the charity War Child. Their goal is to be able to provide education to children that have been affected by the consequences of war.

This year there are 3 Christmas ranges available: Glazed Apple, Frosted Cranberry & also Vanilla Brûlée.  Each of these ranges is available in a wide range of products: from their popular body butters to bath jelly and even some shimmer lotion.

Autumn launches...

Launches here, launches there, launches everywhere. Here are few of the new Autumn launches that I have recently picked up:

First of all these are a very similar concept to the First Aid Beauty Blemish Control Pads : a simple pad that you swipe over your t-zone to prevent break-outs. These are a great concept and initial testing by myself seems to be pretty positive. However, the tub is about as bulky as they come so they are not particularly great for travelling.

£4.99 from Boots

These look a little deceiving: they look like solid lipsticks but when you open them they are liquid lipsticks. I picked this up in the shade 725 which I think is called 'Caramel Infused' (although don't hold me to that!). First impressions are pretty good. It has a smooth application and has excellent staying power.

£6.99 from Boots

Similar to Nars Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil, Maybelline have released their own pencil range called Colour Drama. I picked up the shade '140 Minimalist' which true to its name is a gorgeous muted pink shade. I haven't properly been able to test this out but from swatching on my hands it is looking good for a positive result.

£4.99 from Boots

Benefit Cheeky Sweet Spot:

Oh Benefit, you really know how to spoil us Benebabes. As part of their Christmas 2014 range, Benefit have released a gift set which contains none less than 6 of their famous boxed powders: Hoola, Dandelion, CORALista, Belle Bamba, Rockateur & Sugarbomb. It also includes a small 'Watts up' as well as a mini brush. I couldn't wait for Christmas to get this so I picked this up on the day that it launched. I love it so much!

Mallzee...

If your life is anything remotely like mine, then it is a flurry of activity with not much time spent doing nothing. I am always on the go and never stop. If I am watching TV, then you can guarantee I will be doing something else at the same time ( I am currently watching Homeland while typing this). Which is why when shopping online, I simply don't have time to go trawling through websites looking for one item.

Therefore, let me introduce you to Mallzee: a revolutionary app which allows you browse several websites at the same time.

Here is why I like it:

001) It is very user friendly.
002) You can create style feeds ie coats and the app will collate all the coats matching your criteria in one place for you to view.
003) It is easy to select one brand and view a selection from them.
004) You have the option to save favourite pieces to a favourites list for viewing/buying later.
005) Click on 'buy' and it will take you straight to that item on the brands website so you can make a purchase.

Have you tried Mallzee yet?

Lush Cosmetics Christmas 2014...

Ever since I was a teenager, Lush has always been one of those shops that I have loved going into. From the moment you walk into a store, before you even get to the goodies, you are met with such an amazing aroma which certainly always puts me in a good mood. It's the perfect place to pick up a few treats for yourself.

With Christmas on the horizon, myself and some other bloggers from Aberdeen were invited down to our local Lush for a preview of their new Christmas range. From bath bombs to bath melts and beautifully boxed gift sets, there is a plethora of goodies to fill every Christmas stocking.

On arrival, we were treated to a twist on one of their popular Christmas products, Snow Fairy, in the form of a drink. It was non-alcoholic and very, very nice.

Afterwards, it was then on to some demonstrations:

Bath bombs:

Things that fizz and whizz, are always going to be a hit with me and Bath Bombs are no exception. This Christmas, Lush have a huge range of Christmas bath bombs available. From the warm, spicy scent of 'Cinders' to the appley scent of 'So White', there is something available to make every bath go with a bang! I'm just sad that I ripped out my own bath in my bathroom a few months ago during renovations and I don't think my Dad will let me use his after the last incident (it involved a very, very glittery bath bomb....)

Bath Melts/Bubble bars:

Like the bath bombs, Lush also have a huge range of Bath Melts & Bubble Bars available for the upcoming festive season. From 'The Melting Snowman' to 'Holly Golightly' and even a Snowman making kit (Yes, really!), there is something that will make that bath a little bit extra special. My favourites included 'Star Light, Star Bright' (lots and lots of glittery goodness!) and 'Candy Mountain'.

Skincare:

In addition to the above,Lush have also released some beautiful Skincare products for the upcoming Christmas season.  These include Shower Gels, Shower Jellies, Cleansers, Soaps and a couple of lip products. Of course, there is their ever popular 'Snow Fairy' back again along with 'Rose Jam' but there are also some other lovely items. I particularly love the 'Santa Baby' lip scrub which smells like Kola Kubes, the 'Yognog' soap as well as the 'Snowman Jelly'.

Thank you to the lovely girls at Lush Aberdeen for a fabulous evening!

Products are available now either instore or www.lush.co.uk

Karen Millen Glossybox....

Ever so often, Glossybox likes to release limited edition boxes as part of their subscription service. This month was a limited edition box and it was the turn of Karen Millen to design a box.

Products:
Model Co. More Brows Fibre Gel in light/medium
L'Oreal Professionnel Mythic Masque
Skin Pep Brightening Enzyme & Acid Peel Peeling gel
Skin Pep Dark Circle Eraser
Nails Inc Westminster Bridge Matte Top Coat
Origins Anti-Aging Power Serum

Overview:
I think that this month's box was actually quite a good box. There was a good mix of products to suit. Although I'm not a massive fan of Nails Inc. (What?) as I find that the polishes chip pretty easily on my nails, I still think that it's a good box. I love Origins (FYI their face masks are incredible) so was really pleased to see something from them in there. I also am looking forward to using the brow gel which I think could be a potential dupe for Benefit Gimme Brow.

Under the Microscope: Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Nudist

Bourjois' product releases over the past year or so have been, quite simply, incredible. One of their more recent releases is the release of the Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick. Available in a range of 8 bold shades, these lipsticks aim to be long-lasting with an added bonus of a velvet touch.

Overall, I am not one for bold shades. However, with Autumn/Winter fast approaching and bold shades becoming more prominent, I decided to venture to the dark side and picked up one in the shade Nudist.

Nudist is, what I would describe, as a gorgeous berry pink which is probably the most subtle shade in that range. I opted for this shade as I think that it would be the perfect first foray into bolder lips.

Now I can't say that I agree with the claim that it lasts for 24 hours, but compared to some other lipsticks,it does last even after eating and drinking. What I do really love about this product is the finish of it. Yes, it is slightly wet when you apply it but give it a few minutes and it turns into the most beautiful velvet finish. Lovely.

Have you tried anything from this range?

Ten things to tell my student self...

With Freshers week kicking off all around the country, I thought it was time to share my 'Ten things to tell my student self'. For those who don't know, I studied Zoology at the University of Aberdeen and I can wholeheartedly say it was the best 4* years of my life!

Let's go!

001) Yes, you're a stationery addict but do you really need to take all that stationery to uni? Leave some in the shops...
002) Learn that Tequila is a boomerang and will always come back to bite you on the ass. You should have particularly learnt your lesson after that incident involving tequila and a severely wrecked ankle :/
003) Remember that week in January of 4th year where every single important piece of degree work was due in? Well you should have planned ahead much better to avoid staying in the 24hr building for a week and only leaving at 6am daily to get some sleep.
004) Do a proper food shop with better food choices once in a while. Supernoodles and Sausage rolls do not comprehend a healthy diet.
005) Use your holidays wisely to gain some valuable work experience.Retail not included.
006) Don't think too much about how other people see you and don't try to change yourself.
007) That thesis/practical project report you did in 4th year? Well....don't do a complicated design. Simplicity is key. Oh to be able to re-do this...
008) Use reading weeks productively academic-wise - there are only so many times in one week that your bedroom can be cleaned/re-arranged.
009) Break your chocomilk addiction by not always buying one between every 2 hour lecture in the Zoology building. Should probably apply this to my current lifestyle and attempt to break my Starbucks habit...
010) Stop buying rubbish - you're only going to have to get rid of it when you move after uni.

And there you have it: my ten things that I would tell my student self.

What would you tell your student self?

*Most undergraduate degrees in Scotland are 4 years long :)

June/July/August favourites...

June, like most months, passed in a bit of a blur: BBQs, day trips and planning exciting renovation projects filled my days. Aside from all the exciting things, there were a few not-so-great moments but as they say you can't dwell on the bad, you have to focus on the good (or something like that!).
July, on the other hand, was spent living the majority of the time out of a suitcase (for good reasons which will be revealed soon!). In addition, I also attended the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow which was insanely good. So good! Oh, and I also spent some time with my two favourite Golden boys where I seem to have spent most days out in the garden hosing muck (even in torrential rain) off of Alfie. He is literally a mucky pup! The boy is happiest with a ball and a bog.
August was pretty much like June - passed too fast. It was pretty much a case of getting back to normal (whatever normal is!). I also turned a year older and spent a wonderful weekend up in Cullen with my closest friends for a double birthday celebration.

Beauty Favourites

Urban Decay Naked Palette:
Urban Decay are perhaps the master of creating neutral palettes, this one being their first foray.I have been using this palette a lot over the past month as it is the perfect neutral palette for day or night. My favourite combination has been Naked on the lid, Virgin in the inner corner and either Dark Horse or Smog in the outer corner/crease.

Benefit Pore Professional:
Sometimes when a product is over-hyped, I get suspicious about how good it actually is. This is one of those products. However, after testing out this product for a bit, I have to admit, I LOVE it! I love it so much that, not only has it made it into my monthly favourites, it now has full-size status in my make-up collection.

Marc Jacobs Honey Perfume:
Marc Jacobs perfume is nothing new to me as I have a few already. So naturally, when my Dad went over to America, I asked him to pick me up the rollerball version of Honey. Honey is described as a 'sunny delicious floral - energetic and alluring, with a sparkling golden touch. The perfect mix of brightness and warmth.' Top notes are Pear and Juicy Mandarin; Middle notes are Orange Blossom, Peach Nectar, Apricot and Honeysuckle; Base notes are Honey, Golden Vanilla and Smooth Woods. I really have enjoyed using this perfume the past month as to put it bluntly: it smells amazing! The rollerball concept makes it perfect for using on the go.

Soap & Glory Hocus Focus:
Illuminators/highlighters have not been an essential of my make-up bag for all that long. However, I think that may be changing as I have come across this little beauty by Soap & Glory. Hocus Focus is a liquid highlighter which is easily blendable into any base (I alternate between foundation, BB cream and CC cream). Once applied, the finished look is a gorgeous, dewy complexion which I have been loving the past month.

Loreal Skin Perfection Micellar Water:
Bioderma started it all and now the High Street is jumping on the bandwagon. I picked up the Loreal Micellar Water in Boots one day as something new to try. I really like it and unlike any other make-up remover, it removes make-up without having to drag across the skin. In addition,it also doesn't feel like make-up remover - it feels just like using water.

Random Favourites:

Moleskine Diary:
I am not afraid to admit that I am not always the most organised person in the world. However recently, when I have been in an organising mood, I have been turning to my new best friend - my trusty Moleskine. Yes, moleskines are a wee bit pricey for a small diary but I have been using this soooo much since I got it. Honestly, I don't know what I would do without it now.

Orange is the New Black:
I have been loving this show. Admittedly, I wasn't too keen at first but once I got into it, I got a bit hooked. I've finished it now, so I will have to wait patiently like everyone else for the new season. It's not often that I watch things when the cool kids watch them - I'm usually about 2 years behind the cool kids!

Kirstie's fill your house for free:
I am a bit of an interior junkie. I lose hours to Pinterest simply in the home decor section and I am always wishing I had a larger house for more DIY projects. So naturally, I love a good interior show and I have been watching this program avidly for inspiration.
